01 / The essay
01The work is more than it was
Ask any partner how the last five years have gone and you will hear the same story. More returns, with more schedules in each. More notices, arriving faster, each with its own portal and its own deadline. GST reconciliations that change every month, and a new Income-tax Act with new form numbers to learn.
And the clients are on WhatsApp all day. A bank statement at ten at night, a question about advance tax on a Sunday, a photo of a notice with the words "urgent, please check". The work never stops arriving, and most of it lands on the same few people.
02The answer is not to remove the accountant
Some software companies say the answer is to take people out of the loop. We think that is wrong, and not only for commercial reasons.
A return carries a signature. An audit report carries a UDIN. Behind each is a professional who is accountable to the client, to the institute and to the law. That liability is not a flaw to be engineered away. It is why clients trust the work, and it should stay where it is.
03What AI is good at
AI is very good at the parts of the job that wear people down. Reading a forty-page bank statement. Matching purchase invoices against GSTR-2B. Drafting the fourth reminder for the same missing document. Finding the Form 16 a client sent last March. Looking up a TDS rate, a due date, a threshold.
None of this needs judgement. All of it takes hours, and all of it is where mistakes creep in when people are tired.
